1900-1950

In the period between 1900 and 1950, painting underwent changes unparalleled in the history of art. New ideas and theories about art and society brought with them a host of new isms and manifestoes. Art became political, and art became a commodity. For artists, the independence of art became important and many wished to separate art from life. A more abstract imagery emerged, where colour, form and composition were pivotal.
