For her Artist’s Choice, Veslemøy Lilleengen selected the painting Woman with an Ox Head (1990) by her mother Aud Lilleengen.

A guiding principle in this room has been to show works by people connected to Veslemøy Lilleengen’s childhood in Ørlandet and her education as an artist. She grew up around her family’s artist friends, who became her formal and informal teachers, and helped form her development, as a person and as an artist. For this room Lilleengen has chosen works by these artists; Tone Løvseth Ek, Anne Tove Huse, Eli Anne Tiller and Viola Ugelstad.

“They let me talk and brought me on a study trip to Paris. Being taken seriously as a teenager is unforgettable.”

The selected works touch on family, being a mother and life; hard work, caring, the body and its animal urges. Lilleengen’s method of selecting is one she uses as an artist. She likens it to throwing rocks in the water and seeing if the rings on the surface interlace.
