Toril Johannessen works with a range of different media, such as printmaking, textile, sound, video, and installation. Using information as her raw material, her works are a result of cognitive and intuitive research into various socio-economic and political structures.

Her artistic field of research spans from the microbiology of algae to representational relationships in geography, and through her works she investigates and challenges the meta perspectives that are central to how we view the world. In exploring structures and frameworks for knowledge, from popular science to scientific knowledge, she is developing a unique field, which could be called “the poetics of information and knowledge”.
